3 What is Community or Campaign Organizing?

Community organizing is when members of a Community come together to advance an issue, candidate, cause or organization they believe in. These Community-based campaigns or causes (or what we call Pebbles) generally have three major components:

A Message and Media m-big.png

Your Message is what you have to say. Your Media is the places and the ways to say it. So your Message might be “We need change!” while your Media would be where you display or deliver it: a website, flyers, or emails, for example.

Your Community is made up of the people involved directly in your organization who will work for you (we call these folk Pebblings group_gear.png, as well as the people who will have a say–by voting or otherwise–on the outcome of your campaign. So, for example, your Community could be made up of volunteers, voters, opinion makers, elected officials...basically anyone involved with, or anyone you need to reach, are part of the Community you need to organize and engage.

Actions a-big.png

Actions are the tasks the people working for you (your Pebblings) will take to advance your Message and grow support within your Community.

These components, working together can often result in the change you want. Or, as we like to say:

Message and Media m-small.png+ Community c-small.png+ Action a-small.png = The Change You Want.

Organizing 101 Using aPebble explains how, using aPebble, you can deliver on that formula, or, in other words, how you:

1.Create a Message and the Media to build a Community of supporters.

2.Get that Community to take Actions that result in the change you want.

It is important to note that when you create your first Pebble using aPebble.com, you will notice that the main navigation (and your Pebble) is structured in exactly this way ( Message m-small.png + Community c-small.png + Action a-small.png ) to help guide you through these three crucial elements.
